Before And After – Bedroom Ideas

Everyone likes to start the year with a new look and redecorating and reorganizing a bedroom is just a perfect way to start your year. We recently redecorated a teenage girls room, incorporating existing furniture and incorporating reworked vintage pieces. Every young adult has their own style and this is the age when they want to start decorating with mature taste that is all their own. I believe a young adult should be encouraged to express their own style, even if there is a bit of a deviation from the rest of the house. I look back fondly to my teen days of lavender walls, chandelier, and purple shag!  Take a look at our before and after pictures along with some great tips and ideas…

Here is a before picture. You will notice how got rid of the dresser and got better seating.

Before… The goal was to provide more storage, better sitting, more closet space, and a unified fun look that incorporated her existing posters and love of purple / lavender…all the while keeping a budget in mind.

I suggested finding a large, old vintage armoire which we could repurpose for more closet space  and a vintage chair we could recover and repurpose.  We found the perfect large armoire and chair at a local consignment store (that benefits a charity, yea!).

A amour is perfect for providing extra space along with having a cleaner look.
After! In this after picture you can see how stunning the amoire and chair turned out! . It is perfect for providing extra space along with having a cleaner look. We added new legs to the vintage chair  and reupholstered in Kravet fabric and designed a custom ottoman to match. Lamp is a fun touch from Pottery Barn. Table is West Elm.  Carpet is new and paint is Benjamin Moore.  Artwork is original (some reframed) posters and art of our teen client.
The amour and chair doesnt need to be a new and pricey item. We refinished and attic amour and added new elements to modernize it. The chair was a vintage item that we reupholstered in fun fabric and made a custom ottoman to match.
Before…Can you believe these were the original armoire and chair?! Look for “good bones” and the right size in vintage furniture and then have some fun with paint, fabric, and hardware!  We especially liked the mirror in this armoire that would add light to the room and is always important for a teen getting dressed.  Our client is an excellent student and reader so it was important to create a comfortable place to read…this chair was perfect once we saw past the current fabric and skirted design…we ripped off the skirt, added great legs, recovered in a cozy, contemporary fabric, and made an ottoman to match.
Detail look on how we were able to modernize the amour by giving it a new paint job, restaining its decor and changing its handles. Here is a also a closer look on how we made the traditional chair more youthful and fun.
After! Ahhh the details…look on how we were able to modernize the armoire by lacquering it a dark grey, and we took all the fantastic original hardware and had it dipped silver. The inside we retrofitted with a closet bar to give our client the extra closet space she needed.  Here is a closer look on how we made the traditional chair more youthful and fun.

Here is a before picture on the desk area wall. Less is more is always a good motto for a teenagers room.
Before…Here is a before picture of the desk area. Less is more is always a good motto for a teenagers room.
In this after picture you can see how adding a bookcase and a smaller desk already declutters the area. The book is is from Ballard and the desk is from Pottery Barn (client already owned.)
After! In this after picture you can see how adding a bookcase and a smaller desk already declutters the area. The bookcase is from Ballard Design and the desk is from Pottery Barn (client already owned.) Painting the room a  lighter pastel purple, makes the room appear larger, and creates an environment conducive to studying, and young adult sophistication. To add another layer of sophistication we took that high ceiling and painted it with a pearlized paint!
There is no need to get a new bed and nightstand when the current one works great for the space. Here is a before of the bed and nightstand before we lacquered it match the other pieces.

In this after picture you will notice we kept the same Pottery Barn bed and night stand and just lacquered it and made it compliment the new wall paper from Farrow and Ball.
After! In this after picture you will notice we kept the same Pottery Barn bed and night stand and just lacquered it, added new hardware, and made it compliment the fun statement new wallpaper, which out client loved,  from Farrow and Ball. We kept a nod to her love of music by incorporating her beloved posters and guitars.
Providing a statement wall allows you to decorate more simple and clean.
We added pendant lighting to free up her nightstand, add hip decor, and provide better lighting. Glass was cut for the top of the nightstand to protect the finish.  Bedding and pillows West Elm and Pottery Barn. Young adults are still teens…so make sure everything is protected, washable, stain resistant, budget conscience…but most importantly reflects them and is fun!

Hope you have enjoyed the before and after and all the teenage bedroom decorating ideas!

As always, we look forward to collaborating with you on your next design project.

Wishing you peace,
